Thoughtful Thursday: The “Journey”

Being at MommyCon last Sunday, hearing the great speakers, seeing all the naturally-minded mamas, families, and companies…it was such a great way to start the week.  Lots of talk about birth – breastfeeding – parenting – choices.  The theme that ran through all the speeches, although I think very much unplanned, was about the cycle of things, and the journey we are on.

I followed that day up with a coaching session with Blue Russ on Monday…it really brought my “journey” into technicolor.  She asked me some hard questions – some I don’t have an answer to yet.  The word journey is used in so many platitudes about life and living…yet I look at where I am today and I see it.

I am on a path that I don’t want to leave, yet in order to continue to grow, I have to move onto the next chapter, way station, season, turn the corner…what ever you want to call it.  There is so much that I love about pregnancy, labor, birth, breastfeeding, infancy…so much that is unique, irreplaceable and it cannot be duplicated.  I don’t know what I am going to find that meets the satisfaction I find in that life cycle.

And yet, reality sinks in.  We can’t possibly keep adding children infinitely.  Our respective ages as parents (both 40+), our financial stability, our goals for our family…it feels like it is time to stop having children.  I see our children’s insatiable desire for the things they love – they want more dolls, Legos, what ever their obsession du jour is.  I reflect and wonder, and find the lesson – am I the cause of this?  Is my seemingly insatiable desire for more pregnancy-birth-breastfeeding-babies rubbing off on them?

My eyes are starting to well with tears as I write this.  This sharing with you – the rawness at my core – I am hoping it will be one more step in starting to leave this path of “the baby craze clock ticking” phase, and move onto the path of “growing with the children” phase.

I am getting used to the fact that my breastfed toddler is it.  There will be no more babies to take her place at the breast when she weans.  We are going to move on as a family, and she will never get to be a big sister to a biological sibling.

So what am I grateful for as a mourn this transition?  I am grateful for our four healthy children.  I am grateful for the ability to have children.  I am grateful for the most amazing spouse I could have dreamed of – he is just right for me.  I am grateful that we live in a time and a place where we can teach, and help other families learn about the things that have made such a difference to us as parents.

So today, I have taken one more step toward being okay with not being pregnant again.  Please accept my thanks for letting me share this with you.  And please understand why I may tear up when I see you holding your sweet, smiling infant.  It’s just because I love what you two have – and I wish you all the best on your journey.

We had such a wonderful time at Mommy Con LA.  It would be nice if everyone who wanted to go could make it there…just in case you were one of the families that did not make it, here is a recap for you…here are all the vendors we visited…I think we saw them all…and even did a little buying!!

Consolation prize…at least you did not have to stand in these lines…

Our little disclaimer: just because they are on our list is not an endorsement.  All the info in quotes is directly from info on their marketing materials we picked up on the day of the event, or that the vendor provided for us.  I did add a few comments here and there, just to liven up the post a little 🙂

I included the vendor name, marketing blurbs and contact info if you are interested.  They are not linked because I didn’t want to “break” the page with 80+ links.

Enjoy this “virtual” Mommy Con LA experience…later this week…the Babywearing World Record & Fashion Show photos 🙂

Arms Reach Co-Sleeper
Providing options for families that want to co-sleep without bedsharing

ImageImage

“Many parents, aware of reports in the media about babies dying in adult beds, put their infants away from – from the very first day – to a full-sized crib.  Unfortunately, babies put to sleep in distant cribs have a suffocating rate more than double that of babies who are co-sleeping.  Parents are receiving dangerous advice from authorities that have been led to trust.  Both James McKenna, Ph.D., and Dr. William Sears, experts on the sleep habits of babies, endorse the Arm’s Reach® CO-SLEEPER® bassinet as the ideal way in which to keep a baby safe and close for comfort and breastfeeding.  They both state that an infant sleeping “within arm’s reach” of the parents’ bed dramatically reduces the risk of SIDS and leads to healthier babies and happier parents.”

“Essential oils are natural aromatic compounds found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of plants. They can be both beautifully and powerfully fragrant. If you have ever enjoyed the gift of a rose, a walk by a field of lavender, or the smell of fresh cut mint, you have experienced the aromatic qualities of essential oils. In addition to giving plants their distinctive smells, essential oils provide plants with protection against predators and disease and play a role in plant pollination.”

HUSH Pure Sleep
Organic sleep sacks designed for your baby’s comfort

Image

These sleep sacks made their debut at MommyCon!  It was an honor to meet the founder and hear the HUSH story.  These sleep sacks have design features that Claudia intentionally made with you in mind.  No tags to scratch or irritate sensitive skin, a zipper that zips from the top down so that you don’t have to take the baby out of the sleep sack to change their diaper, and a cloud logo to inspire sweet dreams imprinted at the base of the neck.  The spring/summer sack is in production and ready for purchase…we also got to see the fall/winter sack that is in prototype…same delicious colors and soft fabrics with a layer of bunting inside to add extra warmth in the cooler seasons.

líllébaby®
The only COMPLETE™ Baby Carrier

Image

From their website:
“Behind the Scenes” of the líllébaby®COMPLETE™ Baby Carrier
We set out to make the best baby carrier in the world. It took years, lots of research, and old-fashioned hard work.
“COMPLETE” was originally the project name as we were making the next generation of baby carriers. Our mission was to design a baby carrier that was complete in every way; complete in comfort, functionality, safety and style.
We made a vow to not launch until every team member felt it was truly a perfect carrier – and that took a looooong time. After endless hours of studying parents, interviewing and observing, designing and changing it, the baby carrier has evolved to the finest generation yet.”

Three ideas to add breath to each day

I am so excited to report that my “moon time” came this month and no crazies, other than I feel physically ill right now…and I have been craving sugar the last two days…thank goodness for sweet Honeycrisp and Pink Lady apples…although today I caved and had a cupcake leftover from Night Owl’s birthday party last weekend.

So what has been working to keep me calm during the time of the month that usually has me feeling on edge?  If I am not taking care of myself, I have a couple of crazy days when I am “laying eggs“, and then around the time I start my moon time.  I feel like my volume is a lot higher, I am quicker to feel frustrated…thank goodness I know how to take deep breaths.

Although these are great days to use humor, and I need to remember to use humor even when it’s not “one of those days”, here are the things I feel like I am doing right to feel more even-keeled throughout the month.

Breathing:
I discovered Lotus Wei Flower Essences at a networking event two years ago.  I was at the end of my pregnancy with Otter, I had some concerns about our homebirth, and I knew I had to let them go to have a safe and low-risk homebirth.  The owner, Katie Hess, suggested that I use Infinite Love mist to help me release what I needed to release and to feel nurtured going into the experience.  Fast forward two years – we still love them!  Now we have expanded to the mists, the serums and the infusers…we breathe, rub, and drink flower power.  Puma keeps some in her dance bag, Coach Bruss has them out in his office, and we try to remember to inhale a calming mist every time after we wash our hands.  Every time we are in the restroom together, Otter asks for a color and scrunches up her eyes and takes a deep breath as I can spray her…it’s so cool to think that she is learning and using these tools as a toddler.

Affirmations:
This decision that came out of one of my coaching sessions with Blue has been one of the best decisions I have made this year.  I have enjoyed meditating on them, making them into images and sharing them with other families.  I printed them and put them up where I can see them.  Being mindful of the impact I have as a parent, and the long-term idea of how I want to be remembered as a mother helps me to be a the safe, stable person I want to be to earn my children’s respect and love.

Calendar:
This was another goal I set with Blue – find a tracking system that worked to remind me of appointments, goals, and help me feel like life was do-able instead of overwhelming.  I tweaked a calendar I had used as a manager.  I found that breaking my day up into 15 minutes increments helps me to find space for everything.  We do schedule field trips now, because I can see that they do fit into our school goals and our family goals.  I feel like I am doing a better job for the kiddos because I can find time to do writing and connect on social media without having screen time on “their” time.

So far, so good this cycle.  I am excited to have found three things that I can do consistently to remember to breathe, be the mama I want to be, and keep all the balls in the air.  It feels awesome, and I am trying to remember to take it a week at a time 🙂

On top of these three intentions, I add in the layer that is my routine: prayer, Juice Plus+ and a pretty healthy diet.  I am feeling like I can conquer the world right now.  Now if only I liked to sleep.

What works for you?  What are your keys to keeping calm and getting your day done the way you envisioned?

Munchkin Meals: Another Month of T’s Eats

I can’t believe another month has passed since the last time we featured Munchkin Meals! My son, T, is turning 19 months old on Monday (he is now closer to two than one, aaahhh!) so below is a sampling of what we offered him during his 19th month of life!

Breakfasts

sweet potatoes roasted in coconut oil & cinnamon, banana slices & cheese with a side of 1 parts fresh apple juice & 3 parts water - simple, simple.

He opened the pantry & asked for some “o’s” this particular morning, so I obliged..

Trader Joe’s has these Toasted O’s that are gluten free with a short ingredient list that I buy occasionally as T loves them for stroller and car snacks & has fun putting them on his little fingers (:

I have since decided to finally bite the bullet and go 100% gluten free after various practitioners have been recommending it to me for years – literally about 7 years. If I am entirely gluten free then T will also be gluten free (until he can prepare food himself) so no more wheat pancakes, but we have been making really tasty oat and coconut flour ones! I love that they are filled with protein and good fats along with spices and no sugar. They are perfect to cut up and take as a snack too, T loves eating them with or without toppings.

Dinners

Again, I am so bad at taking pictures of dinner but I remembered a few more times this month!

roasted golden beets, adobo slow cooker chicken with mushrooms & onions, and banana slices. Not pictured: rice - makes such a huge mess, I try to help him with it as much as he will let me.

The only produce that we purchased outside of the farmer’s market this month (aside from one bag of frozen peas for the tuna casserole) was bananas. As we know, bananas grow *nowhere* near us, in a climate nothing like the one we experience. I have not researched banana plantations in depth and although I always purchase organic, they are still from Dole and as a large multinational company I will never entirely trust their practices. BUT, I just can not stop buying them for T, ah! They are so convenient to take with us out of the house, a great source of fiber, easy to top with healthy fats (peanut butter, almond butter, tahini) and have a long counter life. Do the benefits outweigh the negatives? Are there any good alternatives? What do you all think?

What have your kiddos been eating this month, I can always use new ideas and recipes!

Tuesday Tips: Learning At Home

Just in time for Tuesday Tips, I pulled out this great card from a shopping bag – yeah!!  I thought it would be fun to show you how we incorporate these principles in our home…forgive the mess in the background – we live at Sweet Pea House, not a catalog!!

In case you can’t read the fine print in the photo – here are principles plus photos of how we put them into action:

1. Space. Make sure you have a comfortable, well lighted spaces for your children to read, including space in their bedrooms and shared rooms.

We bring our chairs out here for some reading in the green space - a real luxury in AZ!

Here is another outdoor space we enjoy - also a part of the courtyard. I have our sand & water table in this area as well.

2.  Books, books, and more books.  Having a variety of age-appropriate books available ensures there’s always something fun to read nearby.

Books that are in our room for a peaceful family training at the end of the day...we hope the ideas seep in over night!

3.  Creative writing.  Encourage your children to develop writing skills by stocking a variety of colorful writing materials and creating bright and airy space to write and draw.

Each kiddo has a pencil case of one kind or another with the basics...they usually have scissors and a magnifying glass in there, too! Will have to do a treasure hunt for Charger's I guess...

4.  Play!  Make sure you have lots of props for pretend play, and play with your child.  The words you share through play help grow your child’s vocabulary.

5. Read.  If your kids see you reading, they’ll learn that reading is a fun and valuable way to spend time.
